Great Britain not only stands some very exciting sport horse stallions, but the quality of the sport pony stallions is also worthy of mention. One of the oldest and most successful is Godrics Stud‘s Caesar.

Approved by the Weser-Ems studbook in 1991, he went on to complete a very successful performance test and was also placed at the Bundeschampionate as a 5 year old. On his move to the UK, he started an prolific sport career including a Medium Winter Championship and was a member of the GB Pony Team winning Team Silver and Bronze medals.

Such are Caesar’s achievements as a sire he was awarded the¬†British Breeders SPSS Performance & Breeding Award in January 2011 and is graded Elite with the Sport Pony Studbook and was awarded the Dancer Medal in 2014 in recognition of his offspring’s success.¬† There is still frozen semen available for the 2018 season.

As with so many German sport ponys, the sire line of Caesar traces back to a British stallion, in this case the Welsh Section B Whatton Copper Beach. Copper Beach was bred in the UK and was a grandson of the great Downland Chevalier. He was then exported and produced the famous Dutch bred Welsh stallion Constantin who was his most famous son.

Constantin was proclaimed an Elite stallion and has produced over 25 approved stallion sons including Viktoria’s Chirac (Champion Weser-Ems stallion 1994 and Vice Bundeschampion and damsire of double European gold medallist Rembrandt DDH), Cyriac WE (Bundeschampion and leading sire) and multiple FEI ponies, Landes and Bundeschampionate winners. He was in the top ten of German pony sires for many years.

The damsire Askan was a very successful competition trials driving pony and was also the sire of 7 licensed stallions. He was a Welsh pony who was exported to Germany and renamed, but carried a double cross to another very influential Welsh pony stallion – Solway Master Bronze.

Ceaser’s granddam Dione H was the 1987 Bundessiegerstute in Clopenberg (Mare Champion). She was the dam of the Elite stallion Davignon. Dione’s sire Caid was a French bred Anglo Arab stallion who appears in many sport horse pedigrees.

Dione’s daughter Dina, as well as produced Caesar, also produced the stallion Benno’s Dream was was Champion of his performance test and became a very successful sport pony in America at Advanced Medium.

Although Caesar is now in his late 20s, he is still sound and well and until recently was still being shown under saddle at stallion parades. With his incredible track record of producing really talented children’s sport ponies, it seems very likely there will be more Caesar offspring coming through the grades.
