A mixture of young and old caught the eye in the eventing section at Addington. Any British breeders looking to breed an eventer would find a stallion with the genetic talent to breed a top level performer, without having to sacrifice ridability from the selection presented.
Future Sport Horses presented three stallions. The highlight for me was probably the four year old FUTURE GUILTY PLEASURE. An elegant stamp with an active canter, a nice topline and very well presented. He jumped carefully and although still has some maturing to do in his frame, is a interesting prospect. His sire Levisto jumped to 1.40m level and had very good scores in both the dressage and jumping sections of his performance test. His eldest offspring are also now successful internationally at 1.40m. He hails from the damline of Olympic medallist Winsome Adante. FUTURE GRAVITAS has lovely depth and a nice loose trot. He appears light on his feet. He is quite stamped by his sire, the multi talented Trakehner Grafenstolz and is a half brother to Winsome Adante. He didnt jump overly big fences at Addington.
The two younger stallions from the stud were FUTURE PROPHECY and FUTURE HEPSILON. The former is a 4 year old thoroughbred by Power Blade and was shown in hand. He has a very good shoulder. The year younger Hepsilon is heavier in the body and was very calm in his presentation. He combines the blood of Nations Cup and ERM winner Upsilon with a Heraldik daughter.
Another stud with multiple stallions forward was Catherston Stud from Hampshire. OPPOSITION BOMBSHELL is a homebred son of junior eventing medallist Fleetwater Opposition out of a Dutch Courage mare. He was joined by his son CATHERSTON OAKLEY a 6 year old who carries a second cross to Dutch Courage through his damsire Dutch Gold. Catherston Oakley looks more scopey than his sire, quite uphill for an eventer and with a good length of rein.
Catherston also presented TIGER ATTACK, a very successful show horse who has also started eventing. He has a lovely frame and excellent feet but it was a shame he was not shown over a fence. Their final stallion was TIMOLIN who showed the level of his dressage training with clear tempi changes under his usual eventing rider. He is a stallion with a lot of presence who was clearly enjoying himself over the fences.
Other veteran stallions presented included 20 year old WELTON DOUBLE CRACKER who carries the famous blood of Olympic eventer Welton Crackerjack. AMIRO Z is by a Thoroughbred stallion and then has stellar names such as Ramiro and Alme on the damside. He has a powerful hind leg and jumped to 1.45m level but didnt show much in his display as is coming back from an injury. SIR SHUTTERFLY already has the sought after combination of top jumping and Thoroughbred blood and has offspring competing internationally in eventing and show jumping. A stallion I feel is probably underused in the UK given he also has a stellar temperament and a is the half brother to two top international show jumpers, on top of his top 100 WBFSH sire ranking.
One of the highlights for me in the eventing section was another veteran LEPRINCE DES BOIS. He looked fantastic for 21, supple and showing himself off very nicely. A tough horse with really good placings at 5 star level, he has a good frame and hind quarter. He combines a top eventing sire line (Yarlands Summer Song) onto a French jumping motherline.
Show jumping blood was in evidence on a number of stallions presented. ASHWEY LAURENZO is a son of international showjumper Lauriston, a compact stamp with quite a powerful canter but a little horizontal. He was champion of the 2018 SHB(GB) stallion grading. CALIBER ROYALE is by the Holstein S level jumper Cayado out of a daughter of the Thoroughbred Narew. An angular narrower stamp, he had a very neat technique over a fence and a balanced canter.
A more direct eventing pedigree was found in BRITANNIA ROYAL who is a son of the multiple 5 star winner Headley Britannia. His sire Royaldik combines dressage blood from Royal Diamond onto the full sister of Heraldik. Likewise PHILANDERER II who is a son of the legendary Jumbo and has been successful in competition himself including Young Riders European Championship. He was not shown over fences at Addington.
Even more blood was represented by the full Thoroughbred SULA BLUE. Athletic and really covering the ground, he clearly enjoyed his jumping. With a solid performance record too, he has a lot to recommend him to breeders looking for a Thoroughbred sire. Another Thoroughbred sire but one who is new to sport horse ranks is JAMHOORI. Retiring sound after 52 starts he is now being aimed at ROR classes and eventing. He had a nice attitude and a well shaped hind quarter. He is by the triple group 1 winning Tiger Hill who was a prominent sire in Germany.
For pony breeders there were a number of stallion choices. JONKERS METYO, now 20, is still sound and happy to pop round some fences in a nice easy manner. His offspring have done well at the Futurity and SPSS gradings and are now starting their ridden careers. PROMETHEUS might be only 14.2hh but has the stature of a quality little horse. He was scopey with a good canter and is eventing at novice level.
For breeders looking for some Irish influence there were two Irish Draught stallions presented. CARRIGFADA GREY MIST a 10 year old grey has hunted, show jumped and campaigned in working hunter classes. CORRINDON DANCER is probably a little heavier in stamp again and demonstrated a strong walk.
It was good to finish the eventing section with some strong impressions from older and younger stallions alike, and no matter what your mare, there was likely to be a stallion to suit
