13th January 2018 saw the 21st edition of the British Horse Foundation awards with a glamorous black tie dinner at the Grange City Hotel in central London. The evening is a great opportunity for breeders and industry experts to network and catch up with old friends, and most importantly to celebrate those British bred horses who have shone both nationally and abroad.

The most prestigious award is the Stallion AI Services Meritoire Lifetime Achievement Award which was awarded to a lady whose horses featured prominently on this website in 2017. Lynne Crowden of Woodlander Stud crowned a fantastic year when seeing 3 homebred sons of her own homebred stallion Wild Child, licensing in Hanover, Oldenburg and here in the UK. This success was continuing the legacy of World Young Horse Champion Woodlander Farouche (Wild Child’s dam) who is due to make her Grand Prix debut in 2018.

Lynne has long championed the Futurity series and Woodlander stallions have long headed the lists of UK based sires in the Futurity sire rankings. In 2017 Lynne bred the highest scoring Futurity entrant of all ages and all disciplines – Woodlander Gloria (Grey Flannel x Hotline) a 3 year old dressage filly and the two highest scoring dressage foals were Who’s That Girl (By Woodlander Wavavoom) and Woodlander Regetta de Blanc (by Revolution). The highest scoring 2 year old across all disciplines was one of the Wild Child sons – Woodlander Wild Love – who went on to take the champion stallion title at The BHHS and WBS(UK) gradings in the autumn.

Another of the most prestigious and important awards is the Horse & Hound Oustanding Mare Award which for 2017 was the grey Faerie Dazzler bred by Trish Rickards. Faerie Dazzler was herself a 3 star eventer and her best offspring are Tim Price’s international ride Xavier Faer (by Catherston Liberator, 3rd Badminton 2017) and Jonelle Price’s Rio mount Faerie Dianimo (by Dimaggio). Faerie Dazzler has a pedigree heavily influenced by some of the biggest names in British eventing breeding being a daughter of Catherston Dazzler (Dutch Courage x Welton Gameful) out of the SHB(GB) mare Clayton Mudlark (Ben Faerie x Xenocles).

Continuing the eventing theme was the awarding of the Richard Matson Memorial Trophy to the breeder of the highest placed British bred horse at the 2017 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. This award went to the SHB(GB) registered Trevidden, bred Liz and Vin Jones of Preci-Spark Ltd. It was sadly announced at the Awards Dinner that Trevidden had recently passed away due to complications following an injury. In pedigree Trevidden could have been registered as a pure Trakehner, being a son of the legendary eventing sire Fleetwater Opposition out of the Thoroughbred mare Assinie by the French bred NH sire Torus. Assinie had herself competed to CIC2* level.  Fleetwater Opposition is the sire of Opposition Buzz, Yarlands Summer Song and many other top international eventers.

Other special awards were the SPSS Award won by the 21 year old stallion Littledale Bright Star (a son of the famous British Riding Pony Catherston Nightsafe out of  a Welsh part bred mare), on account of the success of his progeny.

The British Equestrian Federation Award to the Highest Placed British Bred Horse at the Longines FEI Senior European Championships went to the Para-dressage horse Dior UKH by the late great British based sire Dimaggio and bred by Suzanne Lavandera.

The Anglo European Studbook Award went to The Billy Stud in recognition of its contribution to the sport horse breeding industry, highlighted this year by Billy McCain, Billy Buckingham and Billy Fanta.
