Promoting excellence in British Breeding

Breeding in Scotland

Scotland is increasingly becoming a hotspot for successful sport horse breeding, from both in terms of results in competition, but also commercially. So what are the Scots doing to generate this success and what can we learn from them.

I spoke to three dressage breeders, Reay Campbell of Caledonia Sport Horses, Caroline Ironside of Morayfirth Stud, and Jennifer Gilchrist of Romanno Stud. To my mind all three of them have 2 essential elements that have contributed to this success. They have all invested in broodmares from exceptional motherlines, and all three of them have spend many years learning about the genetics behind the best horses in sport.

SHB(GB) Yorkshire Stallion Show 2017

The Yorkshire branch of the Sport Horse Breeding studbook is one of the most active, recognising Yorkshire bred stock at an annual awards dinner, running a popular summer show, and organising a stallion parade. For 2017 the stallion parade was held at Richmond Equestrian Centre on Sunday 12th March. A huge thank you to Sally Coles Photography for providing images from the day.

German Stallions February 2017 – Schockemohle Stallion Show

The final day of our trip to Germany saw us finish off in style. After a leisurely breakfast we headed to Gestut Sprehe to look at some of the stallions they have standing at their stallion station in Loningen.

We were shown around by Nadine Heidrich who gave us a frank and informative insight into some of the 40+ stallions they stand. The ones that stood out for various reasons were Hickstead White, De Niro Gold, Diamond Hit, Erdinger and Marc Cain.
